Vocal Warm Up Exercises for Beginners
Before starting any singing practice or riyaz session, vocal warm-up is essential. It prepares your voice, improves control, and prevents strain while singing.
Why Vocal Warm Ups Are Important
Warm-up exercises help relax your vocal cords and prepare your voice for higher or lower notes without strain or damage.
Exercise 1: Humming (Basic Start)
Start with a gentle hum like “mmm” for 2–3 minutes. This activates your vocal cords and improves resonance.
Exercise 2: Lip Trills
Blow air through closed lips to create a “brrrr” sound. This helps in breath control and reduces tension in the throat.
Exercise 3: Sa-Re-Ga-Ma Practice
Sing simple notes slowly in your comfortable scale. Focus on clarity and smooth transitions.
Exercise 4: Siren Sounds
Glide your voice from low to high pitch gently like a siren sound. This increases vocal flexibility.
Exercise 5: Breathing Warm-Up
Practice deep breathing before singing. Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 2, and exhale slowly for 6–8 seconds.
Daily Warm-Up Routine (10 Minutes)
Combine humming, lip trills, sargam, and breathing exercises daily before your riyaz session for best results.
Important Tip
Never skip warm-ups. Singing without preparing your voice increases strain and reduces vocal quality over time.
