Alankar Patterns (Paltas)

Alankars, also called Paltas, are systematic swara-pattern exercises practiced in Indian Classical Music to train and develop the voice. These patterns are sung in ascending (Aroh) and descending (Avroh) order using different combinations of swaras in a fixed rhythm.

Alankars are considered one of the most important foundations of classical vocal training because they help a singer gain command over sur, laya, voice movement, and breathing. From beginners to advanced performers, regular alankar practice is an essential part of daily riyaz as it prepares the voice for raag development, alaap, taans, and improvisation.
